5th Çanakkale Design Market Talks
As part of the 5th Çanakkale Design Market, held with the theme of Upcycling, a series of talks took place on Saturday, June 21.
Talk with Burcu Meltem Arık – Nature Games
Burcu Meltem Arık shared her experiences developed under the Doğa Oyunları Evi (Nature Games House), exploring the possibilities of forming a play-based companionship with nature in urban and peripheral areas. In her presentation focusing on the context of Çanakkale, she presented examples and proposals on how nature games can exist as pedagogical, cultural, artistic, and social forms of expression. Together with the participants, she reflected on how games can create new connections where the city, the countryside, spaces, and intergenerational relationships intersect with nature. The talk revolved around questions such as: “Why does play belong to all ages?”, “How does playing with nature open a space for learning and expression?”, “How do shared nature games across generations nurture communities and cultural memory?”, and “How do play, art, everyday life, and ecological awareness meet?”

Talk with Upcycle İstanbul and Local Makers – On Transformation
In this talk, the founders of Upcycle İstanbul and Local Makers—two initiatives that inspired the 5th Çanakkale Design Market—shared their transformative impact in the fields of upcycling and sustainability. Upcycle İstanbul was introduced as a social initiative that utilizes the transformative power of art and design to raise awareness about sustainability, upcycling, climate urgency, and responsible consumption, collaborating with communities that respect the environment, nature, people, and animals. The talk highlighted the Upcycle Istanbul Art & Design Festival, which has been held since 2022, its call for collective transformation, and the strengthening of its community year by year.
Local Makers was presented as a producer-relationships platform that believes in the power of local production, the healing effect of solidarity, and the transformative potential of stories. It brings together companions rather than merely connecting producers and consumers, advocating for building connections beyond commerce and creating value beyond products. Local Makers reminded participants that sustainability is not a trend but a shared vision for the future.
